I am in a wheelchair, can not use my legs and all my weight is around my middle. I have tried all kinds of diets and nothing has worked. I've tried cutting out all snacks, and just eating 3 meals a day. Nothing I do seems to work. Do you have any suggestions?
Katie,
It sounds like you know the importance of getting into shape. Good for you! You're right in that the way you eat is going to affect your weight, but that's only part of the formula. Exercise must be included in your plan in order for you to lose weight. So, let's look at diet and exercise.
Regarding your diet: 1) I suggest you talk with your doctor about consulting with a dietician. It's possible that given your health status, you could be eligible for insurance coverage for that service. 2) In lieu, of seeing a dietician, I would suggest that you eat smaller meals though out the day n- about 6 very small meals. I don't know your age, so it's hard to say how many calories. Again, talk with your doctor about that. 3) Because you're in a wheel chair you're not as physically active, so it's vitally important that your diet consists mostly of lean meats, low fat dairy, plenty of vegetables, whole grains, and some fruits. 4) You'll need to firmly limit snacks like crackers, chips, cakes and cookies. No sodas and limited juices. Drink mostly water. Nuts, lean protein, low fat cheese on whole grain crackers, fiber rich veggies and fruits are healthier choices for snacking.
As far as exercise goes: 1) Do you have the option to get in the pool. Some community facilities have classes for disabled members) There is a great video series called "Sit and Be Fit." There are several videos within that series that would be appropriate for you. www.sitandbefit.org 3) What other activities can you get involved in? Even social groups like crafts and book clubs would keep you busy and socially engaged.
Finally Katie, your desire to be more fit will take a serious effort and commitment. Round up all the support you can. Let friends and family know that you're serious about making this happen. I recommend that you talk with a friend or a coach regularly to help you stay focused.
You CAN do this!
Best Wishes, Meg
